Armed pro-Russian militants sit atop of their APC during a parade to mark the day of the city in the eastern Ukrainian city of Lugansk on September 14, 2014.
Pro-Russian rebels in Donbas have about 350 tanks and almost the same number of armored personnel carriers, APCs, military expert Andry Tsaplienko wrote in Facebook Dec. 13, Tsenzor.net reported.
“According to intelligence from the rebel-controlled areas, the separatist forces now have 350 tanks and the same number of APCs. Until recently, their number was 490 and 800, respectively,” he writes.
Part of the armor has been withdraw and part destroyed by Ukraine army, Tsaplienko says.
“Why don’t the rebels attack, having such a formidable force? The answer is - Fear. Rebels’ tank men fear to fight in their armor because Russian tanks are easily burned down by the Ukrainian army.
I know a lieutenant who burned 4 tanks during one attack.
The Russian military are analyzing why T-90 tanks recently deployed to Donbas (let alone other earlier models) are so susceptible to going on fire,” the expert writes.
