A Gallup poll has revealed that Ukrainians’ traditionally high approval ratings of Russia’s leadership have drastically eroded over the past year. A significant drop in approval is hardly surprising given Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its continued backing of separatists in Eastern Ukraine.
What is surprising, however, is that Ukrainian approval ratings of Western leadership have not risen in line with the Russian rift. The European Union and United States have generally supported Ukraine throughout the annexation and subsequent unrest. However, despite the tough talk and sanctions, the poll suggest ordinary Ukranians feel they are on their own.
