Poroshenko meets Merkel amid Ukraine's 'extremely tragic test' of independence

Editor's Note: The following statement was released by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko after meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel who is in Kyiv on Aug. 23.
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko held a meeting with Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel who is in Kyiv on a one-day working visit.

At the beginning of the meeting, the President called it symbolic that the visit of the Federal Chancellor took place on the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine and on the eve of the Independence Day. Petro Poroshenko noted that Ukraine was currently united as never before and was going through “an extremely tragic test” of its history.
The Head of State emphasizes that under the recent data, the level of support of independence is now even higher than in 1991 when the country gained it.

Petro Poroshenko called Angela Merkel “a good friend and a strong advocate of Ukraine” and noted that in the last 2 months they had communicated more than 20 times and it had significantly helped Ukraine protect its interests.

The Head of State expressed gratitude to the people of Germany for the support to Ukrainians in their aspirations for peace and democracy.


Angela Merkel noted her intention to discuss German support to Ukraine in difficult times and “the way to peace that Ukraine has to go through”. The Chancellor expressed gratitude to the President for a warm welcome.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yatsenyuk discussed with Merkel energy security of Ukraine.
